Q. What does a lesson typically look like?

A. We begin each lesson with a review of the previous week’s lesson and practice, making sure there aren’t any questions or issues that need to be dealt with before moving forward. From there we spend about half the lesson time working on the lesson and exercises planned for that day. The remaining lesson time is spent focusing on the student’s questions and/or projects of their own choosing.

  • This process may change as your instructor gets to know you and your learning styles better.

Q. Do online lessons work?

A. Yes they do! However, you may need to have some basic fundamentals down before we can authorize online lessons. Some students find they’re more comfortable or feel less pressure in their own environment. We do urge that you take the lesson just as seriously as if you were here in the studio. Remove any distractions and interruptions so that you can give your instructor your full attention and get the most from their lesson.

q. My child is interested in playing an instrument. Is he/she too young?

A. The earlier you start your child playing an instrument, the better. There are tons of resources that prove that learning music does wonders for brain development and intelligence. We normally don’t take on students younger than six, but each student and instructor is different in his/her own way. If you think your child is ready to begin their journey as a musician, sign up for a Free Trial Lesson and let’s get them started.

Q. I already know how to play an instrument. What can I learn from the instructors at American Music Studio?

A. There’s two things every musician needs to improve themselves, a mentor and a metronome. There’s always room for growth and improvement. We have instructors who specialize in music theory, performance, songwriting, and composition. We can help you overcome musical pieces and techniques that may be giving you trouble. Look at our Classes page and see which level of training appeals to you.

Q. I ALREADY PLAY GUITAR; CAN I LEARN drums, piano, or to sing?

A. It’s never too late to add a new instrument to your musical profile! In fact we highly recommend it. By learning more than one instrument you are expanding the way you experience music. Guitar, piano, drum, and vocal lessons compliment each other wonderfully. And the best part, you probably already understand music well enough to jump right in and start playing!

Q. I WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY MUSIC BUT I DON’T HAVE AN INSTRUMENT AT HOME; CAN I STILL LEARN?

A. Learning takes practice! This is especially true with musical instruments. Let us know what instrument you want to learn and we’ll work with you to set up a Rent-to-Buy option. We have a number of low cost options that we recommend. Our payment plans are 3-6 months long with no interest as long as you’re continuing with your lessons. If you decide to quit you can return the instrument with no obligation to pay further payments.

Q. MY CHILD HAS MUSIC CLASSES IN SCHOOL, IS THERE ANY REASON TO SEEK A PRIVATE INSTRUCTOR?

A. Classrooms are great! They encourage collaborative thought and participation. Unfortunately they trade out individual-instruction for group-instruction. Often times this means that individual development can get overlooked. Even worse sometimes gifted students are not pushed to their potential while teachers focus on helping struggling students. Our instructors act as a mentor, coach, and teacher to their students. We work with our students at their pace and learning style. We strive to help them reach their potential without the added pressure of grades, passing or failing, constant deadlines, or the threat of being lost in the crowd.

Q. WON’T THE PRIVATE LESSONS INTERFERE WITH WHAT MY CHILD IS LEARNING IN SCHOOL?

A. No way! In fact private lessons can help keep up with, and go beyond, the expectations of the classroom. We can complement your learning by expanding on and filling in the gaps on anything you’ve gone over in the classroom, or anywhere else for that matter. Let us know what you’re working on, as professionals we’ve been there and can help you get through.

Q. MY CHILD IS NERVOUS AND/OR SHY AROUND NEW PEOPLE, DO YOU MIND IF I SIT IN ON LESSONS?

A. We don’t mind at all; in fact, please do! We encourage parents with younger children to stay and sit in during their child’s lesson. You are their greatest ally in reminding them what to practice throughout the week!
